March 26 (Renewables Now) – Japanese fibers and textiles maker Toyobo Co Ltd (TYO:3101) on Wednesday said it has reached a conversion efficiency of 25% using organic photovoltaics (OPV) small cells and neon lighting with 220 lux.
The company partnered with the French Alternative Energies and Atomic Energy Commission (CEA) in a six-month research project, putting to use a power-generating material for OPV developed by Toyobo. They achieved the 25% efficiency result in a dim room with OPV cells on a glass substrate.
The partners also built prototype OPV modules on polyethylene terephthalate (PET) film substrate with an effective area of 18 sq cm and an output of 130 microwatts under 220 lux.
Toyobo intends to offer the material mainly to photovoltaic (PV) cell makers.
